How To Prevent Blisters

Blisters, these horrible fluid-filled lumps, are formed via damaged skin. They are among the most common injuries and usually occur most on those who love to get outdoors, such as hikers! Within hours a small amount of friction rub from your hiking boots can cause a blister, but these simple prevention tricks can keep those pesky blisters from spoiling your adventures.

Blister prevention

You will be surprised how much a few simple hacks can make a difference before and during hitting the trail! It would help if you first eliminated as many contributing factors as possible; for instance, check that your footwear choice is not causing the problem.

These five steps will help you gain more knowledge:

Ensure your shoes fit accordingly

If your footwear choice is too tight, you will gain pressure sores, yet it can lead to friction and irritation if they are too loose. It is beneficial to pull out your insoles and measure your foot against them. You should have around a thumbs width of space between the end of your toes and the insole.

If this fails, then many outdoor retailers will be able to measure your foot to help find the right size using a calibrated device.

Break-in your new boots

Even the most perfect footwear can cause blisters if not properly worn-in. Before heading outside, wear your new hiking boots around the house. You may feel silly, but your feet will thank you later!

Furthermore, when planning your next adventure, make sure it is only a small one, planning a 20-mile day to then find out you didn't break in your boots enough will not be pleasant.

Choose an appropriate pair of socks

Water-wicking materials such as merino wool or any synthetic materials is always a good choice. Remember everybody's feet are different, so you must think about what is comfortable for you and your hiking boots.

Bypass prolonged periods of wetness

A lot of moisture around your feet breaks down the skin, giving an open invitation to blisters.

Remember- keep your feet dry as much as possible and make sure you've packed an extra pair of socks!

Protect problem areas

A product known as moleskin will significantly reduce friction, therefore, will efficiently stop blisters and hot spots before they even get the chance to begin.

Nobody knows your feet better than you, so make sure to assess properly for your problem areas!

It is so easy to ignore irritations and hotspots, especially when out on the trail. If you think you're beginning to feel a hot spot, take the time to sit down and address the problem before it worsens.
